Worlds Qualifier at JFKs

The World Championship Qualifier at JFKs turned out to be quite a fun day out at the office for those that turned up. Especially after Brendan Connors said "shall we do a calcutta", which we did and it added a bit of fun at the start with the bidding wars for who wants to back which player and added interest to the rest of the comp for those that were knocked out but still had an interest on who was left in as they had backed them to win it.

The day started with 17 runners, there were a few no shows that had let us down right at the last minute (Sefton Payne, James Sheed and Etienne Wagner), but we still had enough for the comp to go ahead.

The draw was done with one prelim match which was ex-London A team player Stephen Wallace against the fast improving London C team player John Munro, with John being rewarded for for all his efforts as of late with the win and into the first round proper.

1st round matches started straight away with a fairly even split of what were the tournament favorites. The match of this round was 2 of London's newest players who had just come back into pool after a 10 year sabatical, Daniel Baker and Chris Yates who used to play for Bucks. With Dan just edging out Chris in a tense final frame.

It was nice to see Darren Baker and John Munro who have both been putting in a fair bit of practice lately, playing so well. Especially with our next county match being against National Champions Surrey in a couple of weeks.
The quarter finals threw in 2 tense matches with A against B players. Jack Pople, recent winner of the first Herts tour just edging out Paul McHale and rising star Rob Chalmers putting in a great performance to beat Sean Halligan.

The semi finals saw John Kelly edge out Jack and Rob edge out Darren to set up an all London B player final.
The final turned out to be a one sided affair with Rob making a few mistakes early on and getting punished for them and then John potting like an A team player (lol) to cruise to victory, take the chequered flag and entry into the 2009 World Championships.
